Mobile phone users are taking advantage of the latest smartphones and other devices to view YouTube videos in increasing numbers.

According to the Official YouTube blog, some 100 million videos are played via YouTube Mobile each day – roughly the same amount as were enjoyed via the organisation’s website as recently as 2006.

But consumers with older handsets that perhaps do not offer video-playing ability or reliable internet connection may find trading in their mobile in favour of a newer model may be a shrewd move if they are to join the statistics.

The blog notes YouTube is now rolling out an updated version of its mobile service, perhaps making it the perfect time to upgrade.

Aspects of the new function that may appeal to users include it being "really fast" and offering a user-friendly touchscreen interface.

One phone that could be ideal for enjoying the technology is the new iPhone 4, of which 1.7 million were sold within three days of its release last month.
