A new Apple iPhone may soon be an option that is made available to mobile phone users.

Gadget fans may have been excited by news reported by website Gizmodo suggesting a new iPhone had been found, after it was lost by an Apple engineer.

The handset is heavier than the iPhone 3GS by three grams and has a battery that is 16 per cent larger than the existing one, it is suggested.

Conrad Longmore, editor at Mobile Gazette suggested that consumers may be able to look forward to a screen with a higher resolution than previous iPhones, a camera flash and a front-facing video calling camera.

"All the evidence is that this ‘lost and found’ iPhone is the real deal. It is very unusual to get a real glimpse of what Apple has planned," he said.

According to financial results released by Apple, it sold 8.75 million iPhones in the second quarter of 2010.
