Microsoft has had a tough time trying to win over consumers to its operating system ahead of the likes of Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.

Indeed, recent research conducted by IDC claimed that the vast majority of mobile phones shipped in the second quarter of 2012 were powered by either Android of iOS.

Microsoft hoped it would be able to impact the smartphone market by partnering with Nokia, however, its marquee Lumia devices have not been as popular as had been predicted.

UK managing director for David Akka said it is fair to suggest that Microsoft’s track record in the smartphone market has been “less than auspicious”.

“Time will tell if newcomers such as Windows Phone 8 – expected to be launched in autumn – will make any impact on the success of the iPhone or iPad,” he commented, before adding that the recent launch of the Surface tablet could help regain market share.
