Eco-conscious consumers in Beckenham and Bromley have broken a Guinness world record for the highest number of mobile phones recycled in one go.

Jaron Chamberlain, area manager for the Scope charity, wrote to the Bromley Times to inform readers of the environmentally-friendly result of a mobile phone recycling campaign local branches of its charity shop carried out in January.

He applauded people in the region for donating their old mobiles to the cause, which saw thousands of pounds donated in “much-needed funds”.

These will be used to support the organisation’s work with people who have disabilities.

Mr Chamberlain said: “The response we had was overwhelming.”

The recycling campaign – which ran between January 8th and 15th this year – smashed the previous record of 952 handsets.

Scope, a registered charity based in London, aims to help those with disabilities achieve their ambitions and enjoy the same opportunities provided to able-bodied people.
