The mobile phone industry is on the right track when it comes to recycling handsets, it has been claimed.

Denise DiRamio wrote for CommunicationsNews this week that the telecommunications sector is undertaking a number of initiatives to encourage people to recycle their mobiles and stated it "seems to be heading in the right direction".

However, consumers need to make sure they do more themselves to ensure that their phones are disposed of in a green and eco-friendly way, she said.

"If only a fraction of cell phone users recycled their phones, the impact would be huge environmentally," Ms DiRamio remarked.

She quoted Geesung Choi of Samsung as saying his company is focusing on ensuring its products are made using more renewable materials.

Consumers could make £55 by selling a working Samsung S7330 to Mazuma Mobile, while those with broken versions of the handset can sell them for up to £25.
