A significant portion of people who own a mobile phone say they are worried about the cost of using their internet services when overseas.

Research by the European Commission found some 72 per cent of individuals limit what they use when abroad because of high charges.

Meanwhile, only 19 per cent of consumers feel the current tariffs for using mobile broadband in another country are fair.

Neelie Kroes, vice-president of the European Commission for the Digital Agenda, says: "Telecom companies must listen to their customers. Consumers feel there is still much room for improvement, particularly for data roaming."

The study also finds men are the most likely to make voice calls, whereas text messages are the preferred method of communication among ladies.

Mobile broadband fans who would like to use their internet options more often may wish to switch to the network Three, as it has been named the best provider in the last two YouGov polls on the subject.
