Statistics have been made available for the first time detailing Brits’ use of the internet on mobile devices.
The Global System for Mobile Communications Association reported that during December 2009, 16 million people around UK used their mobile phones to access the internet.
Consumers who wish to access the internet on their mobile could consider recycling an old handset for cash.
Natasha Stokes, editor of Mobile Choice, said: “Mobile internet became mainstream largely because people wanted to access their social networks on the go and also needed to search for info such as addresses while out.”
She added that consumers were often looking to use their phone for social networking updates, product reviews, price comparisons across various retailers, mapping and sports news.
ABI Research expects 1.2 billion handsets to be shipped worldwide by the end of this year.
It also revealed that 336.5 million handsets were shipped in the final quarter of 2009, up year-on-year by 15.1 per cent.
