Microsoft Office is reportedly being optimised for mobile phones powered by Apple iOS and Google Android operating systems.
This means that the vast majority of smartphone owners across the UK will be able to access programs like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Users of handsets like the Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X+ will be able to view documents on their screen, but only Office 365 subscribers will be able to edit the files.
The technology giant will apparently release the application early next year, after the 2013 edition of the productivity suite for PCs goes on sale.
Customers should be able to download the tool from the App Store or Google Play.
Millions of people around the world currently use Microsoft Office at work and home for a wide variety of purposes.
Allowing customers to utilise the software on the go with their mobile phone will mean added convenience, and it could be especially beneficial to businesspeople.
