LG has announced that it will be launching a mobile phone complete with a flexible screen this year.

If everything is kept on track the company plans to have a flexible OLED smartphone in shops before the end of 2013, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The firm has already announced it is to release curved OLED televisions this year, so it’s not a massive surprise that it has decided to convert the technology to create a flexiphone.

With Samsung also expecting to release a handset equipped with a bendy screen the two companies could find themselves going head-to-head to be the first.

According to LG Mobile vice president Yoon Bu-hyun, the OLED component will use the company’s own LG Displays.

LG has previously dismissed the idea of having a flexible OLED screen, but maybe the rumours surrounding what Samsung is planning has spurred them into action.
