Mums and dads have been advised that one of the best ways to keep in touch with their children when they leave for university is to trade in used mobiles and invest in a smartphone.

Judy Reith, parenting coach at, explained that it can be difficult to come to terms with the change that happens as a result of a son or daughter moving out.

However, it should also be looked at as an opportunity, with some parents even compiling a list of things to achieve when their children are out of the way.

Whatever an individual’s feelings on the matter, it is always preferable to stay in touch – and smartphones are one of the best ways to do this.

“[They] give you even more flexibility about when you can contact your son or daughter. You don’t have to be at home in front of your computer – it’s coming with you,” Ms Reith stated.

O2 Home Broadband recently conducted a survey that found 60 per cent of parents are worried about their children leaving home.
