New figures suggest that many people could be selling mobiles in order to raise the cash to splash out on a smartphone.

Gartner has released figures that show sales of smartphones are on the up, with a 74 per cent rise recorded in the second quarter of 2011 compared with the same time in 2010.

These sales made up 25 per cent of the total mobile market, showing that smartphones are also becoming a growing force in the industry, as this figure was just 17 per cent a year ago.

“Smartphone sales continued to rise at the expense of feature phones. Consumers in mature markets are choosing entry-level and midrange Android smartphones over feature phones,” explained principal research analyst Roberta Cozza.

One of the most attractive options to many people who plan to replace a mobile with a smartphone is the Apple iPhone, which Will Findlater, editor of Stuff magazine, recently praised as a world-leading model.
