In the weeks since its release, rumours have been flying around that Samsung has been working on a number of different spin-off variants of its popular flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S5 – and according to new leaks, yet another potential handset has joined the ranks.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard that the Korean company is working on both a Prime version of its phone – although it has denied this – and a mini variant, as is standard practice each year.

However, according to famously trustworthy Twitter rumour site @evleaks, there is possibly another Samsung Galaxy S5 in the offing, with an Active version being leaked this week.

Galleries of images appear to show a device that is more rugged and rough and ready, perfectly designed for those with a very active lifestyle who might run the risk of breaking their phone in normal circumstances.

One of the main failing points of the Galaxy S5 that has been highlighted so far in its relatively short lifespan is the fact that it has a poor build quality compared to its main rivals, the HTC One M8 and the Sony Xperia Z2. So this device could also go a long way to gaining trust with those who failed to see the potential in its flimsy plastic chassis.

Of course, this is not a new move from Samsung. For a company that is becoming almost as standardised and predictable as Apple, this is a page straight out of its own 2013 manual, wherein a Samsung Galaxy S4 Active followed closely behind the firm’s flagship device of the time.

So what should buyers be expecting from the new device? The pictures from @evleaks reveal little more than what it looks like at the moment – and more importantly the fact that it simply exists – but there is still a lot that we can take from the way the company operated last year.

In terms of looks, the images appear to show a phone that will actually be a step away from the previous offering from the company.

Gone are the smooth corners and curves of the S5, replaced with a sharper and more rugged looking device that really lets the Active stand up to its title.

The shape should allow for far better grip for those who decide to go for this handset, and it’s a perfect solution for people who are living an active life or work in places where there is a potential for their smartphone to be dropped or otherwise damaged.

Inside, if the S4 Active is anything to go by, we might be expecting something that is a little bit of a downgrade from its predecessor. Last year’s variant had a lower spec camera, for example, than the S4 that came before it.

Rumour sites have been busy already with this one, though, and many reckon that they’ve sussed out the direction that Samsung will be headed with the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active already. Most expect to see the device ship with a 1080p HD AMOLED display, quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and a 16MP rear-facing camera, which would make for a very impressive package.ADNFCR-2155-ID-801724774-ADNFCR
