iPhone 12 key features

Packed with innovative new features and leaps in smartphone technology the iPhone 12 range is set to shake up the mobile phone market. Leading features include 5G capabilities, A14 Bionic chips, an advanced dual-camera system, Super Retina XDR display and a Ceramic Shield front cover. Read on as we delve into each of these features and more!

Big Design Changes

One of the biggest visual design changes you will see on this range of iPhones is the move away from the smooth rounded edges we have come to expect from the iPhone 6 and onwards. Instead, the iPhone 12 range has a classy sharp edge design not too dissimilar to the old iPhone 4s. Encased in aerospace-grade aluminium and combined with the new Ceramic Shield front cover, the iPhone 12 range is sleek and stylish.

Ceramic Shield

Using new durability technology, the Ceramic Shield on the front of the new iPhones is meant to make them the most durable phones on the market, supporting a 4x better drop performance than previous models due to the infused nano-ceramic crystals within the Shield.

Colour Finishes

Apple also unveiled a new colour range for its new models with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 coming in 5 fresh colour finishes; White, Black, Blue, Green, and (PRODUCT)RED. All (PRODUCT)RED purchases contribute directly to the Global Fund to combat COVID‑19.

On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max have four new fresh finishes; Graphite, Silver, Gold, and Pacific Blue. All looking sleek and stylish, fit for any professional.

Super Retina XDR display

The newly designed iPhone 12 models feature expansive edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR displays for a brighter, more immersive viewing experience with system-wide colour management for industry-leading colour accuracy. This OLED technology allows for richer colours and for the devices to be 11% thinner than previous models.

5G

The first of its kind, the iPhone 12 series will utilise faster 5G networks. Reportedly boasting improved speeds for faster downloads and uploads, higher quality video streaming, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity in apps, FaceTime in high definition, and more. Users will also be able to enjoy a secure, fast connection, reducing the need to connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots.

Iphones are also known to have the most 5G enabled network brands of any smartphone so you will be able to get 5G in more places throughout the world. Also, all that speed can open up amazing possibilities for future app creations and features to come.

Latest 5-nanometre chip technology

The new A14 Bionic chip is the first 5-nanometre chip in the industry, with the size of advanced components being atoms wide. Apple claims it is faster and more efficient than ever, having the fastest CPU and GPU by up to 50% compared to the fastest competing smartphone chips. This power enables console-quality gaming experiences, powerful computational photography, and more while delivering great battery life.

iPhone 12 Camera

One of the most impressive features of the new iPhone 12 range has to be the improved camera capabilities. In the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, you will find a 12MP wide camera with an f/1.6 aperture, and a 12MP ultra-wide shooter with a f/2.4 aperture and 120-degree field of view to deliver powerful computational photography.

The Smart HDR 3 tech also found in all of the iPhones helps you capture photos with improved colours and contrast, as well as Night Mode improvements which see 27% more light being brought into the camera to capture incredible low-light shots.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max takes the pro camera experience even further. The new ƒ/1.6 aperture Wide camera boasts a 47% larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels for a massive 87% improvement in low-light conditions. It also includes the expansive Ultra-Wide camera and a 65 mm focal length Telephoto camera for increased flexibility with closer shots and tighter crops offering 5x optical zoom range.

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max also offer the highest quality video in a smartphone. Reportedly, they are the first cameras and only devices in the world to enable an end-to-end experience for HDR video with Dolby Vision, up to 60 fps, and even better video stabilisation for cinema-grade productions.

iPhone 12 Battery

In terms of battery life, the iPhone 12 reportedly offers up to 17 hours of video playback, 11 hours of streaming video playback, or 65 hours of audio playback. The iPhone 12 mini offers up to 15 hours of video playback, 10 hours of streaming video playback, or 50 hours of audio playback. The iPhone 12 Pro offers up to 18 hours of video playback, 11 hours of streaming video playback, or 65 hours of video playback. The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers up to 20 hours of video playback, 12 hours of streaming video playback, or 80 hours of audio playback, making it the longest battery life in an iPhone history.

All of the new iPhones offer fast charging, providing a 50% charge in 30 minutes using a 20W power adapter. Alongside the iPhone 12 models, Apple introduced MagSafe accessories designed to work with a ring of magnets built into the back of the iPhones. The feature will allow for wireless charging achieved through a variety of accessories you can buy separately.

No Headphones or Charging Plug

The only potential inconvenience of the latest iPhone is the fact that they don’t come with a charging plug or headphones, only the USB-C to Lightning Cable. However, Apple has chosen to do this for good reason, with the aim of keeping to their environmental goals of reducing waste and their carbon footprint. Instead of shipping new devices with new peripherals, Apple is encouraging you to use ones you already have or, if you really must buy brand new, they have brought over the MagSafe software from their MacBooks to create wireless charging accessories for the new line of iPhones.
