The Apple iPad has been launched and may provide consumers with an option to consider if they choose to recycle their old mobile phone for cash.

The device – which may bridge the gap between smartphones and notebooks – weighs just 1.5 pounds and had a 9.70-inch light emitting diode-backlit display.

Apple’s iPad will run most of the 140,000 apps which are currently available through the App Store, including apps that consumers have previously bought for their iPod touch or iPhone.

"iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price," said Steve Jobs Apple’s chief executive officer.

Andrew Harrison, UK chief executive of the Carphone Warehouse, welcomed news of the Apple device, stating that an increasing number of devices were being designed focusing on how the consumer uses the internet "very much in mind".

Consumers will be able to purchase the device from late March for a retail price of $499 (£308) for the 16GB model.
