Consumers who desire an iPhone might decide to sell their current mobiles in order to make way for the revolutionary device, after it was suggested that infrared technology for the product is on the way.

Patently Apple has reported that the US manufacturer has applied for protection of its concept, which will see a next-generation camera included in future models equipped with infrared.

The US Patent and Trademark Office is said to have confirmed Apple's submission this week.

According to the online publication, the development could turn iPhones into handsets capable of offering guided tours of public buildings or providing prices and details about products in shops.

It went on to note that there is a "lot of potential" in the mooted advancement, perhaps making it significant news for fans of the Apple product.

Apple released the iPhone 4 last June and it is speculated that it may be preparing to release the next incarnation of it later in 2011.
