It seems like a lot of details about new phones are leaked at around this time of year. With major industry events coming up, like the Mobile World Congress at the end of February, the big smartphone manufacturers are preparing to unveil exciting new devices, and some of the details about those are bound to get out somehow.
The latest company to fall victim to leaks is Huawei, which is set to launch a new range of devices in March. As successors to the popular P10 series, it is thought that these new smartphones will all be called a variation on the Huawei P20. However, some more about these devices may now be known thanks to new images obtained by Slashleaks.
These pictures allegedly come from Chinese companies that are responsible for making cases for the upcoming phones. This is becoming increasingly common, as this type of firm needs advance details of new handsets in order to have cases ready for the devices' release.
There are three images, each of which shows a slightly different phone, but they all seem tied together under the P20 umbrella. Here's what they could be, and what they look set to contain:
The triple camera
The first thing to bear in mind is that a lot of this is conjecture; while the images clearly show Huawei phones, it's not clear which model is which. One of them shows a triple-camera setup, which is so high-end it could be the upgraded P20 Plus. However, it could also be the standard model, with the Plus coming with different upgrades.
The three cameras – with a visible double-LED flash – would match with existing rumours of a triple-lens setup with a total resolution of 40MP. Since December, it has been thought that the P20 will have impressive cameras, with 5x hybrid zoom on the rear and a separate 24MP lens on the front.
Another image shows a phone with two cameras, but a notch in the screen similar to the iPhone X. Again, it is not clear which type of P20 this is; the premium Plus version, or the standard design.
While the triple-camera setup seems to suggest a more expensive, high-end phone, the similarity to the iPhone X suggests the dual-camera phone might have more impressive internal specs and be marketed as the more premium handset.
Then there is a third image, showing a phone with a dual-lens camera and no notch. However, this image shows a rear fingerprint scanner, which cannot be seen on the other models.
While some are suggesting that this is the premium model, others think the image shows the Huawei P20 Lite. The picture seems to suggest a slightly smaller phone, although it's not clear if the addition of a fingerprint scanner would make sense in the quest for a thinner handset.
Huawei has allegedly showed its hand regarding when these devices will be launched. It has supposedly sent out press invites for an event in Paris on March 27th, during which the P20 series will be unveiled. This is unusually late, as many manufacturers are launching their flagship handsets at the upcoming Mobile World Congress at the end of February.
This could indicate some delays or problems with manufacturing the handsets. However, it could also be simply because Huawei doesn't want the other Mobile World Congress releases – including the Samsung Galaxy S9 – to overshadow the P20. Whatever the case, it isn't long until we find out.
