HTC officially unveiled its 8X and 8S Windows Phone 8 (WP8) smartphones at a New York event on September 19th.

The new WP8 operating system is being adopted by numerous mobile phone manufacturers, such as Nokia and Samsung, in a bid to compete against market leaders Apple iOS and Google Android.

HTC describes the Microsoft operating system as "groundbreaking, innovative and fresh".

The interface for WP8 is colourful and HTC has incorporated this theme into its handsets.

The flagship 8X will be available in colours including California Blue, Graphite Black, Flame Red and Limelight Yellow.

Customers can choose Domino, Fiesta Red, Atlantic Blue or High-Rise Gray for the mid-range 8S handset.

The 8X smartphone features a 4.3-inch HD Super LCD 2 display, 1 GB of RAM and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

The 8S is lower-spec, with a four-inch WVGA LCD display, 512 GB of RAM and a 1.0GHz dual-core processor.
