Electronics companies, including mobile phone providers, have been urged to stand at the forefront of green issues and improve the rate of recycling of electronic goods.

Environmental group Greenpeace has called on firms and individuals to wake up to the importance of recycling and make every effort to ensure old electronic goods are not simply dumped in the bin when they are finished with.

An undercover investigation by the organisation discovered that electronic waste “is being disguised as second-hand goods and shipped off to Nigeria, where it is sold, scrapped or illegally dumped”.

Mobile phone operators are increasingly tackling the problem of electronic waste and helping to promote recycling of old mobile phones and other devices.

Mobile manufacturer Nokia, for example, was rewarded at this year’s World Mobile Congress in Barcelona for its efforts to boost recycling. The company has established the industry’s largest voluntary scheme for recycling old or unwanted mobile handsets.
