For months, consumers and news sites have been looking forward to CES 2018, with many anticipating big news from Samsung. The Korean tech giant was expected by many to reveal its upcoming flagship handsets, the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, at its panel at the tech show, or at the very least mention some details about the device.
However, Samsung's panel has been and gone with no mention whatsoever of the Galaxy S9. We heard about the 146-inch MicroLED TV named 'The Wall', as well as a fridge that serves as an Internet of Things hub for your home, but no mention of the phones. While the show is not yet over, many now think that if Samsung was going to mention the S9, it would have done so at its panel.
Despite the silence of its manufacturer, there is still news surrounding the S9. However, rather than coming from Samsung, the latest info stems from rumours and leaks. If the company does not announce something fairly soon, it runs the risk of losing control of the narrative surrounding its flagship device.
So, what do the rumours say about what consumers can expect from the S9 and S9 Plus? Here are the latest leaks surrounding the device:
RAM and storage
This is perhaps the most dubious rumour on this list, coming as it does from a Weibo post. The tipster has been fairly reliable in the past, but take the information with a grain of salt. Apparently, the Galaxy S9 will ship with 4GB of RAM, while the S9 Plus will come with a more impressive 6GB.
This would make sense, as the Galaxy Note 8 already comes with 6GB of RAM. The rumour also states that, while the S9 will come with a choice of either 64GB or 128GB of storage space, the S9 Plus will also be available with 256GB. Some regions are even rumoured to be receiving a model with an enormous 512GB of storage.
There have been a lot of different rumours surrounding the displays of the S9 and S9 Plus, but one seems to have been confirmed by the announcement of a screen protector. Olixar has released a cover for the S9 that matches the measurements of the Galaxy S8. Not only that, but it seems that all the sensors and buttons are in the same place as well.
The fact Olixar released this cover makes this rumour fairly likely, as the manufacturer could incur significant losses if it did not match the measurements of the released phone. However, if this is the case then it means the S9 will be forgoing a dual-camera setup, as the cover indicates a single lens.
However, this protector is only for the S9. It could well be the case that the S9 Plus will have a different screen and even a dual-camera setup. And speaking of that aspect of the phones…
Samsung has just applied for an interesting trademark. Uncovered by Galaxy Club, it reads: “The Camera. Reimagined”. This heavily implies that the S9 will be marketed based on its camera, which in turn suggests that the device will see a significant upgrade from the S8 in this regard.
A tip in the form of a tweet seems to agree with this, as it has been reported that the Galaxy S9 Plus will have a lens with a F/1.4 aperture, while the Galaxy S9's will be F/1.5. This would allow for better photography, especially in low light, than most other phones on the market.
There are a few other aspects of the phones that are fairly exciting, but the main one that is turning heads is that the S9 and S9 Plus will reportedly contain all-new Exynos 9810/Snapdragon 845 processors. It is thought that this will tie into the cameras, as it would allow for higher-quality photography.
