People should recycle used mobilephones as a means to generate cash for a worthy cause, it has been advised.

In support of a new drive to raise funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), one expert told the Sheffield Star that many people may not be aware of the good their unwanted devices could be doing.

Sal Chapman, a regional representative of the GDB foundation, said the group was confident that a number of consumers will have defunct handsets "tucked away".

"By simply recycling your mobile phone, we can raise the vital funds we need to train guide dogs. The impact that a guide dog can have on someone’s life is priceless," he added.

One option people could consider is starting an initiative at work to get together as many used gadgets as possible to raise cash for organisations like GDB.

The group was founded in 1931 and currently receives no government support, relying only on volunteers and donations.
