The possibility of a large number of people choosing to sell mobile phones and upgrade to a model powered by the Android platform over the Christmas period has been raised.
Such a suggestion comes after Andy Rubin, senior vice-president of mobile at Google, who used Twitter to reveal the latest statistics on the acclaimed operating system.
He told followers that some 3.7 million Android devices were enabled on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
With brands such as HTC and Sony Ericsson opting to run their mobiles on the platform, it may be no surprise that Android handsets were so popular.
But some could wonder whether all those who switched to the system opted to sell or recycle their old mobiles to make way for a sparkling new model.
Mr Rubin recently used his Google+ account to inform readers that some 700,000 Android devices are typically registered around the world every day.
