Mobile phone users planning to take their BlackBerry, iPhone or Nokia device on holiday with them this summer have been given a boost.

The European Court of Justice has ordered mobile operators to cut their data roaming charges, meaning users can stay online and in touch with their emails at a considerably lower rate than before.

According to, this could affect 22 million Britons due to take a holiday in the coming months – many of whom will take a mobile away with them.

Some telecommunications companies will be forced to slash their prices by as much as 70 per cent.

Matthew Wheeler, the site’s communications expert, sounded a word of warning though, stating: “Wherever you are going it’s still well worth contacting your network before you travel to ensure that you fully understand the cost of using your phone while you are away.”

Holidaymakers should also note the legislation applies only to countries in the European Union, such as popular holiday destinations like Spain and Greece.
