Consumers around the UK could soon be asking themselves whether it is worth trading in mobile phones in order to upgrade to a Sony Ericsson model.

Such a possibility comes as it is revealed that Sony is to buy Ericsson's share of the company.

As such, the mobile provider will belong in full to the Sony group and could soon benefit from the innovation and development that characterises its work in other electronics markets.

The separate companies are to work together again, however, on a wireless connectivity project that is set to benefit mobile users.

Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s chairman, chief executive officer and president, said: "This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want."

The network Three recently confirmed it is to stock Sony Ericsson's Live with Walkman as an option for its customers to switch to.
