Holidaymakers looking forward to their overseas breaks this summer may have to weigh up whether to take cash for phones now or to keep their existing device for the duration of their time away.

Jonathan Morris, editor of What Mobile, has explained that some companies will offer an incentive to sign up with them.

He said that while it may be tempting to agree to a deal that offers free data to start with, it is not worth tying oneself into a long contract.

“Do a bit more research when travelling, otherwise the simple advice is what the networks seem to be saying, which is to turn data roaming off,” Mr Morris stated.

Another option could be to take cash for phones and put it towards paying for the data costs on a new model over the holiday season.

The European Commission recently confirmed that separate mobile contracts to cover holidays will be available from 2014.
