The number of people recycling mobile phones in the UK could be greater than anywhere else, after new research showed the country’s residents are keen to snap up smartphones – possibly in place of old devices.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has released data that depicts the UK as the world leader when it comes to smartphone adoption.

It found that 67 per cent of all handsets sold in the nation are smartphones, the highest number of any country it studied.

The figures relate to the 12-week period to July 10th and also showed Android to be the most popular operating system, with a 48.8 per cent share.

Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director, offered an explanation for the trend, stating: “The two countries which sell the most smartphones (Britain and Australia) are also the same two where the highest proportion of smartphones are given free to consumers signing up to contract tariffs.”

The International Data Corporation recently named Apple as the big winner of the smartphone market in the second quarter of 2011, describing it as the leading brand.
