A growing number of mobile phone owners are using their device to access BBC iPlayer, as the latest figures from the broadcaster show that almost a quarter of traffic is from handsets and tablets.

Apple iPhone and Android device owners can download the free app from their respective App Store and Google Play.

All users can stream television shows, which were aired in the past seven days, allowing them to watch missed episodes of series like EastEnders and Top Gear.

Those who install the app can also listen live to BBC radio, meaning they can play the Nick Grimshaw show at breakfast or find out who the latest Desert Island Discs guest is.

Apple iPhone owners are able to download their favourite television shows so they are available to watch for the next 30 days, even without an internet connection.

This function is fantastic for those smartphone users going on long journeys or away on holiday, and it should come to Android handsets soon.
