Millions of Barclaycard Visa credit card customers will soon be able to make “contactless” payments using a sticker on the back of their mobile phones.

The free Barclaycard PayTag can be attached to any mobile phone and to make a payment people will have to hold it against a scanner for it to be recognised.

Around a third of the size of a normal card, the PayTag can be used to make payments of £15 and under and this will rise to £20 in June.

Officials from the bank behind the scheme insist it is “safe and secure”, emphasising that it comes with “the same 100 per cent fraud protection as any Barclaycard”.

This follows a report released by Juniper Research last month that suggested ten per cent of mobile phone users would pay bills using their device by 2016.

“More than half of us say that the item we’re most lost without is our mobile phone, so we’re giving people the option of using them to make easy, convenient, everyday payments,” said chief executive officer of Barclaycard Consumer Europe David Chan.
