The iPhone is the most popular internet-enabled mobile phone handset, a new report published by Net Applications has shown.

According to the organisation, 66 per cent of the people who browse the internet on their mobile phones do so on an iPhone.

In second position, although a good way behind in terms of total users, was JavaME with nine per cent of the market share.

Perhaps surprisingly, Palm and Blackberry made up five per cent of the market share combined.

In addition, the iPhone also seemed to be the most sought-after mobile internet device by people who may not already own one – the report also found that the handset accounted for more internet searches in February than all the other wireless and mobile devices combined.

Apple announced the iPhone on January 9th 2007 and it first appeared on June 29th in the US. It was named Time magazine’s Invention of the Year in 2007.
