Apple unveils next generation of iPhone

The wait is finally over: Apple has finally unveiled its latest generation of iPhone: the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

And they're jam-packed with exciting features that we can't wait to get our hands on!

What does it offer?

The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus boast what Apple bills as the most durable glass ever seen in a smartphone.

The handsets feature a beautiful glass back design and comes in three finishes: space grey, gold and silver. They're water and dust-resistant, too.

It's not just their stunning appearance that has got us excited. The new Retina HD displays look like a big step forward, as the addition of True Tone adjusts the white balance of the display.

As a result, it provides a more natural and paper-like viewing experience, along with the best colour accuracy you can find on a smartphone.

People who like watching videos and listening to music will also find plenty to enjoy on the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus, as the handsets boast redesigned stereo speakers.

These are up to 25 per cent louder than the previous ones and deliver a deeper bass sound, thereby giving a richer listening experience to music fans.

Improved camera functionality

Another standout feature of the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus is an improved 12-megapixel camera.

Featuring a larger and faster sensor, deeper pixels and a new colour filter, the camera lets users capture “outstanding photos with vibrant, realistic colours and more detail”.

People who want to capture high-quality videos will also find plenty to enjoy here, as the video stabilisation has been improved and captures images in 4K quality up to 60 frames per second.

Additionally, both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus support HEIF and HEVC, enabling large videos to be compressed so they can be stored on your handset for later viewing.

The ultimate AR experience

The iPhone 8 Plus features cameras that are custom-tuned to deliver what Apple describes as “the ultimate AR experience”.

The device's powerful A11 Bionic chip means it can handle incredible graphics and deliver world tracking and scene recognition, along with real-time lighting estimation.

As a result, the potential to use games and apps featuring AR could be set to grow massively in the coming years, with users enjoying “fantastically immersive and fluid experiences that go far beyond the screen”.

Wireless charging

The glass back design of the new iPhones means it can charge up without being plugged in. The charging accessory – the AirPower – features plenty of space where you can charge up to three devices at the same time.

The most advanced mobile operating system ever
Both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus come with iOS 11, an operating system that Apple believes is the most advanced in the world.

What does Apple say?

Philip Schiller of Apple said: “iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are a new generation of iPhone that improve on everything we love about iPhone.

“iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have new glass and aluminium designs, new Retina HD displays and A11 Bionic – the smartest chip ever in a smartphone.

“Packed with more advanced cameras with Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting, and the highest quality video capture in a smartphone, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus enable the freedom of wireless charging, all with AR optimisation like no phone ever before.”

You can pre-order one from Friday 15th September, while you'll see them start appearing in stores from Friday 22nd September.
