People who take cash for phones in order to switch to a different model may increasingly be turning to the Apple iPhone.

According to the latest figures from the International Data Corporation (IDC), the US brand was the big winner in the second quarter of 2011.

Indeed, it described the company as the “new leader” of the smartphone market, noting it took the crown during the recent three-month period.

Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst on IDC’s Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team, said: “Ever since the first iPhone launched in 2007, Apple has made market-setting strides in hardware, software, and channel development to grab mindshare and market share.”

The industry as a whole shipped 106.5 million smartphones in the quarter, up from 64.4 million in the same spell in 2010.

Last month, ABI Research found Apple to be holding off competition from Samsung to remain the world’s most popular provider of smartphones.
