Apple’s iPhone operating system (OS) was one of the fastest growers in the mobile phone market last year, research has revealed.

Findings from Gartner suggested that the iPhone OS’s share of the market increased by 6.2 per cent in 2009, meaning that it now has a 14.4 per cent share of the market.

The popular device could be an option worth considering for consumers and money to put towards a purchase of the handset could be obtained through mobile recycling.

Google’s Android OS also increased its market share to 3.9 per cent last year , an increase of 3.5 per cent.

“Android’s success experienced in the fourth quarter of 2009 should continue into 2010 as more manufacturers launch Android products,” said Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner.

She added that some communications service providers and manufacturers have expressed concerns about Google’s intentions in the mobile market.

The Apple iPhone is available in the UK on Tesco, Vodafone, O2 and Orange.
