Although Apple's iPhone 5S will not be released until Friday, it may be that not all customers will leave with the flagship mobile phone in their pocket.

A number of reports have suggested that the initial number of iPhone 5S models is way below the amount expected to launch the device, at least in the US. Although there's no news on international carriers, it appears that there may not be enough to go round on September 20th.

One US carrier told AllThingsD that it has a "grotesquely unavailable inventory" and said that many other suppliers are down on stock.

Pre-order for the iPhone 5S open at 8:01am in the UK and it is thought stores will start selling the device shortly after, as well as starting to roll out the affordable iPhone 5C.

It is thought that the new colour addition to the iPhone family, space grey, will be the most popular version of the handset and therefore more will be in stock compared to white and gold variants.
