Following the recent news that Tesco Mobile is to follow O2, Orange and Vodafone in becoming a stockist of the handset, a spokesman for an online technology news resource has talked about how this may affect the sector.
Fraser MacDonald, editor at Stuff Magazine, said that the iPhone is now “in a transitional stage”, meaning it is now less exclusive, but noted this may not lead to the price war some have predicted.
“The phone has lost some of the exclusivity that Apple products normally attract, so the fact that Tesco are doing it means they are taking something that is already happening to a greater level,” he added.
Mr MacDonald concluded, however, that the battle may be fought in the field of features and services, but much will depend on whether Tesco puts out the device as sim-free.
