The Apple iPhone 3G S has been unveiled at the manufacturer’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, ending months of speculation about the device.

It has emerged that the main focus of the revised model will be faster connectivity, with its creators suggesting it will offer double the speed of its predecessor.

Also announced was the inclusion of a three-megapixel camera – up from the two-megapixels of the older handset – as well as features like high-resolution video recording and auto focus.

Philip Schiller, senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing at Apple, said it was hoped the changes would give the gadget an even broader appeal.

“[The] iPhone 3G S is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet and we think people will love the incredible new features including autofocus camera, video recording and the freedom of voice control,” he added.

Apple released the current version of the iPhone in June 2008, this latest model is expected to be on sale later this month.
