Consumers recycling mobile phones for a fashion-conscious handset may be doing so thanks to the influence of Apple, it has been advised.

According to a spokeswoman from technology news and reviews resource, the manufacturer is responsible for making gadgets that look good a more mainstream commodity.

Editor of the site Linsey Fryatt explained that before the Apple iPhone 3G, the iPod had already started to change the way we look at personal electronics – and other companies have followed this lead.

"So now you’ll get gadgets in obviously lots of different colours, also different looks and it’s just become much more important to people what they carry and what they’re seen with," she added.

In other news, the BlackBerry Curve 8520 was praised by Latin American operator Movistar for its "attractive" good looks and ability to connect with "fashionable" young users.

The latter model is now available on the Vodafone network.
