A huge number of people may wish to turn to the Apple iPad after selling mobile phones in order to join the tablet revolution.

New research from Strategy Analytics found that the device managed to record an 80 per cent market share in North America over the course of the second quarter of 2011.

The manufacturer is said to be the dominant force in the US tablet sector – a position other firms are likely to find hard to change.

In total, Apple shipped roughly six million iPads during the three-month period, putting it some way ahead of the likes of Samsung and Motorola.

"A combination of cool branding, user-friendly hardware, entertaining services and savvy retail distribution has made Apple a formidable market leader," explained Alex Spektor, senior analyst at the organisation.

Earlier this month, ChangeWave Research released findings that suggested consumers were relatively unmoved by the departure of Apple's chief executive officer Steve Jobs and are still buying its products in large numbers.
