Entertainment apps are leading the way when it comes to people’s smartphone usage, a new study has found.
According to research by Analysis Mason, almost a third of the time people spend on their phones is taken up with using entertainment apps.
Social media apps in particular are proving dominant, with 15 per cent of people’s time taken up using apps from the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Smartphone users spent six per cent of the time on their devices accessing dedicated video services such as YouTube.
Interestingly, the figures for the amount of data these apps use are quite different.
Indeed, entertainment apps were found to account for 57 per cent of data usage. Meanwhile, social networking was responsible for 29 per cent of data usage overall, while the figure for video services was 24 per cent.
So-called millennials were found to be the most prolific users of entertainment apps, although the report noted they are proving popular across many different age groups.
Figures showed that eight in ten consumers use dedicated TV or video apps, with YouTube proving the most popular, ahead of paid-for services including Google Play Movies and Netflix.
The findings from Analysis Mason were based on data usage statistics gathered in the UK, the US, Germany and India.
The UK has the highest data consumption rate of all four nations, with Britons using 15GB of data every month, mainly on Wi-Fi connections.
