How to factory reset an Xbox One ready to sell

Whether you’re just trying to fix a bug, or you want to prepare your Xbox One ready to sell, there are different occasions where you may want to either reset your console or perform a factory reset on your Xbox One.

When you’re fixing bugs, a soft reset or hard rest could be enough to fix the problem, but every now and then you may need to completely reset it to factory settings. If you’ve been lucky enough to get your hands on the new Xbox and plan to sell your Xbox One, then you’ll want to do a factory reset before you do. You’ll want to do this no matter how you’ve decided to sell it, whether it’s to a friend or to us here at Mazuma.

So in this article, we’ll be covering how to soft reset your Xbox One, how to hard reset your Xbox One and finally, for those looking to sell their console, how to do a factory reset on Xbox One.

How to soft reset your Xbox One

A soft reset is what you’re likely going to use for fixing a number of bugs like freezes or minor glitches. It should affect your data and is essentially just a simple restart of the console. You can do this with your controller if the screen hasn’t frozen, or directly on the console.

How to soft reset an Xbox One with a controller:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller and hold until the menu appears
  2. Select ‘Restart Console’ for a reset option or ‘Turn console off’ to completely power it off.
  3. If you chose to just turn it off, leave it for moments before pressing the power button on the Xbox button again to turn it back on.

How to soft reset an Xbox one on the console:

  1. Simply press and hold the power button on the front of the console
  2. Wait a few moments before pressing the button again to boot it back up

How to hard reset your Xbox One

Some problems can be more tricky to fix, and you may want to perform a full hard reset. Again though, your data should be safe, so if you want to completely remove your save data and restore it to original settings, this isn’t what you want. It will keep your games, apps and save data fully intact.

To perform a hard reset simply:

  1. Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds
  2. Release once the Xbox has completely shut down
  3. Disconnect the power cable from the back of the console
  4. Wait another 10 seconds before plugging it back in
  5. Turn the console back on using the power button

How to Factory reset your Xbox One

When neither of the other approaches has worked, or you’re selling your Xbox One, you may want to reset and remove everything. When you go through this process, you’ll delete all your data including saved files, games and apps. It could save your console though, so it can be worth trying if you’re looking to fix an issue. When recycling or selling your console you’ll want to go through this process too to make sure it’s restored to factory defaults.

It’s just a few short steps:

  1. Make sure your console is turned on
  2. On your controller, press and hold the ‘home’ button
  3. Choose the settings menu (denoted by the gear icon)
  4. Then browse through System Link > Console Info
  5. Select ‘Reset Console’
  6. You’re then presented with different options. Press ‘Reset and Remove Everything’ to reset the console.
  7. Wait for your console to restore
