Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Decline In Q1 Of 2012

Gartner has claimed that worldwide sales of mobile phones have declined by two per cent in the first three months of the year.

This is the first time a drop has been noted during a full quarter since the second three-month period in 2009.

Samsung's Android-based smartphone sales in the first quarter represented more than 40 per cent of the operating system's shipments globally. No other vendor achieved more than ten per cent of the share.

Data from the Kantar Worldpanel ComTech found that Android retained its number one position in the smartphone market in the UK during the last 12 weeks.

Principal research analyst at Gartner Anshul Gupta said the first quarter is traditionally the strongest in places such as Asia but production has been surprisingly slow.

"Global sales of mobile devices declined more than expected due to a slowdown in demand from the Asia/Pacific region," he added.
