Worldwide mobile phone market grows

03/02/2012

The worldwide mobile phone market has seen a steady increase in the fourth quarter, while sales for the feature phone market has declined faster than anticipated, figures have shown.

Research conducted by IDC have claimed that the mobile phone market grew by 6.1 per cent year on year in the fourth quarter of 2011, while the feature phones market has declined to its lowest point in over two years.

The 6.1 per cent increase was higher than the IDC's forecast of 4.4 per cent but was weaker than the 9.3 per cent growth seen in the third quarter of 2011.

"The mobile phone market exhibited unusually low growth last quarter, which shows it is not immune to weaker macroeconomic conditions worldwide," senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker Kevin Restivo said.

Last week, AT&T announced a record for the number of smartphones it managed to sell in the fourth quarter of 2011.
