Ubuntu Edge misses funding target
Canonical broke records by raising the most amount of money for its Ubuntu Edge mobile phone through crowd funding but still failed to meet its target.
The deadline of 11.59pm on August 21st 2013 passed and the company had $12,809,906 (around £8 million), significantly under the $32 million that it had set as its original target. Indiegogo, the crowdfunding website, has decided to waive the usual fees and says the $12.8 million donated will be returned to those who gave it.
Speaking to the Guardian, the founder of the company, Mark Shuttleworth said he won't be letting the small matter of almost $20 million put him off.
Canonical had hoped that another business would stump up the millions of dollars needed to reach the Ubuntu Edge's target, but few did.
Mr Shuttleworth said he is probably going to focus on releasing a Linux-based operating system that will run on normal smartphones.
