Motorola backs modular mobile phone concept
The future of mobile phones could be modular, according to a new statement from Motorola, with each individual component being easy to swap out, replace and recycle.
Each component, such as the battery, display, processor or camera of a modular phone can be easily changed, so users can hand-pick the components they want.
Motorola is developing a modular phone, which it calls Project Ara. Paul Eremenko, speaking for Motorola, said the Project Ara design “consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules”.
Mr Eremenko said that Project Ara was going to be “a free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones”.
A very similar concept was introduced last week by Dave Hakkens, who launched what he called Phonebloks.
Motorola is now working with Hakkens to develop the idea, which it says it has been working on for over a year.
