IPhone 6 To Have A Sapphire Display?

Rumours surrounding Apple’s new iPhone 6 are continuing to increase in number and it has now been suggested that the company may be looking to feature a synthetic sapphire display.

Although the release date still has to be confirmed, with speculation growing that it will be early September, The Wall Street Journal reported that the smartphone giant plans to use the sapphire display in the higher-end models of the two versions of the iPhone 6.

The high cost of the material may, in turn, mean that there is an increase in price for the high-end version. It was reported that this rise is mainly due to the increased costs of the components.

There are various benefits to a sapphire screen, as it is a much more durable material and is more scratch resistant than glass. However, at a rumoured $16 (£9.58) cost to produce, is much more expensive than Gorilla Glass. This is the material used for the iPhone 5s as well as many other smartphones, and costs just $3 to make.

Other rumours about the iPhone 6 include that the device will have a better 10-megapixel camera and will operate under the new iOS 8 system, which hasn’t come as much of a surprised given that it is Apple’s newest mobile operating system.

It must be taken into consideration that Apple has yet to confirm any news on the iPhone 6, although it is believed that Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook will unveil details at a media event on September 9th.
