BBM proves popular on iOS and Android
BlackBerry launched a version of its messenger service (BBM) on Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems.
The new BBM applications have been well received by 5 million early adopters who downloaded it in the first eight hours that it was on sale.
The Canadian firm's messenger service is one of few bright spots for it at the moment, as rumours about a takeover bid and the company struggling to keep pace with its rivals are rife in the tech world.
BlackBerry were forced to delay that launch of the app last month, as an unofficial version of the Android app was leaked and downloaded 1.1 million times.
However, the firm is facing criticism as downloaders cannot immediately access the service.
They are prompted to enter an email address that will add them to a queue, at which point they have to wait until BlackBerry contacts them and grants access to the app.
