VoIP Slashed Roaming Charges

Consumers who commute between the UK and the US have seen their roaming charges slashed because of the launch of a new product by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider Truphone, it has been revealed.

The service allows handsets to use the same SIM either side of the Atlantic and offers lower roaming charges.

Existing charges in the USA for UK carriers averaged out at £0.94 per minute for receiving calls and £1.17 for making calls.

Diane Myers, a directing analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research, said: "The mobile side of VoIP is really just beginning to blossom and, while it is far from mainstream, it is definitely growing in options and innovative offerings."

She added that VoIP carriers are showing innovation and that one-third of all Skype-to-Skype calls are now video.
