Video 'to take off' in mobile phone market this year
Those without mobile phones capable of supporting high quality video and audio content could feel left out this year, if one expert's prediction comes true.
Richard Titus, controller of mobile and future media for the BBC, suggested this week that 2009 will be the year when video really takes off on mobile phones as the smartphone grows to a position of prominence.
"My sense is that we are at a critical moment where the audience is finally ready to have video and radio content on the mobile," he remarked.
His comments were made in light of a new effort by the BBC to target the mobile phone segment with its iPlayer product and appear to fit in with the suggestions of comScore's Herve Le Jouan, who claimed in December that the mobile internet is at a "pivotal stage" in its development.
Mr Le Jouan suggested that the release of the Apple iPhone 3G was a key indicator that the mobile phone internet market had "come of age".
