Verizon 'to offer Windows 8 phone this year'
Verizon Wireless is planning to sell a new Nokia mobile phone using Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system this year.
It would mark the first time the firm has released a Windows device since May 2011, Bloomberg reports.
The news provider claims a person with knowledge of the matter said Verizon is looking to lessen its dependence on Apple's iPhone and devices that run off Google's Android.
For Nokia and Microsoft alike, the move would bolster their efforts to try and regain a market share that is now dominated by Apple's iOS and Android.
It would also provide another option to the anticipated Nokia mobile phone that is expected to be released early next month, ahead of the launch of the new iPhone 5.
"Nokia has had a difficult time breaking in to the U.S. market. Landing on the Verizon network is a positive development. It is a big step in the right direction," analyst at Needham & Co Charlie Wolf told the news provider.
