Using mobile phones mid-flight could soon be allowed
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the US Department of Transportation have disagreed on whether or not mobile phone calls should be allowed on planes in mid-air.
Use of phones in mid-flight is currently banned in the US, however the FCC has voted to launch a public review of the law. Should this happen, the Department of Transportation may enforce its own ban.
The ban exists because mobile phone signals in mid-air used to interfere with signals on the ground. However, this problem no longer exists due to technological advances.
A survey found that the US public is closely divided on the issue, with only 48 per cent saying they would oppose the FCC’s decision to lift the ban.
Thomas Wheeler, chair of the FCC, said that the ban was simply one of many “regulations that serve no purpose”.
