US to lift ban on phone calls during flights?
Passengers travelling to the USA may find themselves able to call friends and family from 10,000 feet, as the Federal Communications Commission is considering lifting the ban on in-flight mobile phone calls.
The individual airlines would still be able to enforce a ban if they chose to, but in theory all passengers could be allowed to make calls.
Mobile phones would still be banned on takeoff and landing, but once the plane’s altitude rose to over 10,000 feet the devices would be fine to use.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has already loosened restrictions on using electronic devices such as mobile phones while in flight, as of last month.
Many airlines have said that they would still uphold the ban, however.
A spokesperson for Delta Air Lines said: “The overwhelming sentiment is to continue with a policy that would not allow voice communications while in flight.”
