Trade in mobiles to join smartphone revolution
More people could be trading in mobiles in order to switch to a smartphone, with the latest devices now making up 28 per cent of the world's total shipments.
New statistics from IMS Research show that some 420 million smartphones will be created and sent around the globe in 2011.
It is predicting that this figure will rise to a billion by 2016, as more affordable smartphones are slowly rolled out in more locations.
The body also suggested that different brands are performing with varying success in the market, as some embrace the latest technology while others resist.
For example, LG enjoyed only a three per cent market share in 2010, despite being the world's third-largest original equipment manufacturer.
Nokia also reported a declining performance, with 16.7 million smartphones sales in the second quarter of 2011 – down by 34 per cent on the same spell in 2010.
Juniper Research made similar forecasts about the future of the smartphones industry recently, also suggesting shipments will reach a billion within the next five years.
